How We Work

At Moxie Interior Design Co. we apply a flexible approach to each project by broadly following the work stages set out by the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Depending on our clients’ preferences, we are happy to take a scheme up to the Concept Design stage and hand it over to the contractor or homeowner to implement. Or, we can take the project right through to the technical / detail design stage and assist with project managing the scheme through to completion.

Discovery

We find the simplest way to get things moving is by having a chat. At no charge, we offer half an hour of our time to help you determine if we are the right people for the job.

You can tell us what you want to achieve, ask us more about how we work, and what we think your project may cost. If, after this time you wish to proceed onto the next stage, we can book in a mutually convenient date to pay a visit and dig a little deeper into your requirements.

Stage One - Consultation and Brief development

We visit the property with you and begin the client-led process of developing your brief, getting to know the space, and establishing next steps.

Deliverables at this stage include:

  • a written brief documenting your requirements, budgets and timescales

  • an inspiration board displaying ideas based on our discussions

  • a digital model and plans

This will form the basis of any designs moving forward and is vital to help ensure we are on the same page. It’s not unusual for us to produce several iterations of the inspiration board or redraft the brief as we establish exactly what you do and do not like.

During our first visit we will:

  • undertake a site survey and photograph the space

  • establish budget and timescales

  • ask probing questions so that we can get to know the end user, understand how the space will be used, unearth any current problems, find out what elements of the property or fixtures and fittings need to stay and what needs to be added.

Stage Two - Concept Design

Building on the brief created in Stage One, we will work up a concept design which includes:

  • to-scale floor plans including loose furniture and fixed joinery items

  • 3D visuals

  • a comprehensive list of product recommendations that are comfortably within budget

  • surface finish and fabric samples (if required)

Concept Design - Important Points:

  • Any bespoke joinery items such as reception desks, wardrobes or bars will be shown conceptually and can be detailed once the concept design is agreed. This detailing will form part of Stage three.

  • Some clients may wish to undertake the implementation of the design from this point onwards. Others have used our detail and technical services explained in Stages Three and Four.

Stage Three - Detail Design

Depending on the project and the client’s requirements, this stage may include some or all of the following:

  • Joinery details

  • Lighting layouts / Mechanical and Electrical drawings

  • Full Elevations and Sections of the space

  • Flooring finishes plans

  • Detailing for kitchens and bathrooms

  • Budget development - we will contact potential contractors for estimates and firm up costs once the project progresses

  • Program development

What Stage Three doesn’t include:

It’s important to note that we are not Structural Engineers or Architects so will not be able to advise you in a professional technical capacity.

If you wish to undertake significant structural changes we are always happy to work alongside other consultants, or we can put you in touch with the right people at the right time.

Stage Four - Implementation and Project Management

Making a project happen involves many moving parts: placing orders, making sure you’ve got the measurements just right, coordinating contractors and monitoring quality to name a few.

If you would like someone to take away the headache of getting your project over the line, we would love to help.

Good to know:

We are not decorators, joiners or upholsterers. Sewing machines scare us a little and our cutting-in has never been up to much. We’d rather leave all those fiddly details to the expert craftspeople we know and love.

We have a list of reliable contacts who can do all those things and we are able to manage the people and the process on your behalf.
